Proposed updated Rules for Autism Valued
At this AGM, members will be asked to vote on a special resolution to adopt updated Rules for Autism Valued Inc. The Board recommends the updated Rules to members. They bring our Rules into line with our name, with how we describe autism today, and with how our governance works in practice.
The key changes are:
- Autism, not Aspergers: The Rules now refer to "Autism" and the "Autism community" instead of "Aspergers" and the "Aspergers community". This applies throughout, including in AV's purposes and in who can be a member. Autism is defined by reference to the DSM-5 diagnostic manual: Level 1 or Level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder, which includes people previously diagnosed with Asperger's Disorder or Asperger Syndrome.
- Board, Directors, Chair and Deputy Chair: The Committee will be called the Board and committee members will be called Directors. The President will be called the Chair and the Vice-President the Deputy Chair. These are changes of name only. The roles, powers and election processes stay the same.
- Quorum for general meetings: The quorum will be 5 members or 3% of members entitled to vote, whichever is greater. Currently it is 3% only.
- New child safety rule: The Board must adopt and maintain a Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy and Code of Conduct that complies with the Child Safe Standards under the Child Wellbeing and Safety Act 2005 (Vic). All Directors, staff, contractors and volunteers who have contact with children must follow it.
Special resolution:
"That the Rules of Autism Valued Inc be altered in the form set out in the marked-up Rules (November 2026) circulated to members with this notice, and that the Rules as so altered be adopted as the Rules of the Association."
A special resolution passes if at least three-quarters of the members voting at the meeting (in person or by proxy) vote in favour. The updated Rules take effect once they are approved by Consumer Affairs Victoria.
You can read the marked-up Rules, showing every change, in the AGM reference materials below. If you have questions about the updated Rules before the meeting, please email our AV admin team.
