AV Events

Updated March 2023

Our guest speaker and panel events are on hold while we continue to search for a new volunteer Events Coordinator.

We are hoping to run more events in the future, and as soon as we have further information, we will share this with our community.

To be included in upcoming emails about events, we invite you to add your name to our AV Mailing List.

About AV events

Our AV Events, one of our most popular activities, provide an opportunity for our community to come together as a whole for an evening or an afternoon either in person or via Zoom. Typically held online, our guest speaker and community events allow professionals and experts in a range of topics important to our community to share their personal and professional experiences, and are designed to inspire, share information, and promote acceptance and understanding of Aspergers and autism.

All AV members have access to tickets for themselves and one additional person at a discounted member rate. Find out more about AV membership on our Become an AV Member page.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact our AV admin team.

Discord is a free voice, video and text chat app for teens and adults aged 13 and over. Teens can access Discord via their computer or smart phone. Using Discord, they can join servers they have been invited to, create private servers with their friends, or message each other individually or in group chats. We suggest reading the Parents' Guide to Discord Blog before joining for the first time.

Is it safe for our teens to use?

Yes. Aspergers Victoria have created a dedicated, secure server for our Teens group. Only registered participants can access the AV Teens Discord server, and the link changes monthly for security. Our moderators have the list of registered teens and will only allow them to be online during the meeting.

        Young Adults Group: May

        - in person meeting (barbecue)

        About the Young Adults Group

Our Young Adults Group is a great place for Aspergers, autistic and other similar neurodivergent profile adults aged 18 years - 35 years (approx.) to meet, chat, and play games with no social pressure. As this is a parent/carer-free zone, we invite any parents or carers to attend our separate Parents & Carers group.

This activity is likely to be fully booked with a waiting list. We're very much looking forward to seeing everyone, however if something comes up and you can no longer attend, please make sure you cancel your registration so someone else can attend.

        Book Club: May

        About the AV Book Club

If you enjoy reading fiction and would like to have an incentive to read more, expand your reading list, and to meet with others to share your thoughts and insights and to hear others' perspectives, consider joining the AV Book Club for your next literary adventure. We read and discuss work by autistic authors as well as non-autistic authors.

This month, we will discuss Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan

In stylish, uncluttered prose, Naoise Dolan dissects the personal and financial transactions that make up a life—and announces herself as a singular new voice.

Ava moved to Hong Kong to find happiness, but so far, it isn’t working out. Since she left Dublin, she’s been spending her days teaching English to rich children—she’s been assigned the grammar classes because she lacks warmth—and her nights avoiding petulant roommates in her cramped apartment.

When Ava befriends Julian, a witty British banker, he offers a shortcut into a lavish life her meagre salary could never allow. Ignoring her feminist leanings and her better instincts, Ava finds herself moving into Julian’s apartment, letting him buy her clothes, and, eventually, striking up a sexual relationship with him. When Julian’s job takes him back to London, she stays put, unsure where their relationship stands.

Enter Edith. A Hong Kong–born lawyer, striking and ambitious, Edith takes Ava to the theatre and leaves her tulips in the hallway. Ava wants to be her—and wants her. Ava has been carefully pretending that Julian is nothing more than an absentee roommate, so when Julian announces that he’s returning to Hong Kong, she faces a fork in the road. Should she return to the easy compatibility of her life with Julian or take a leap into the unknown with Edith?

Politically alert, heartbreakingly raw, and dryly funny, Exciting Times is thrillingly attuned to the great freedoms and greater uncertainties of modern love.
